Overbrook School for the Blind - Kappen Aquatic Center
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
W.S. Cumby recently completed construction of a new 25,000 SF natatorium. The new ecologically responsible and energy efficient aquatic center houses a competition pool as well as a recreational and therapy pool which includes special water features used for physical rehabilitation. The facility also serves as a connector to two existing buildings on the OSB campus to provide flow between buildings and provide indoor access to the pools.
The building’s green features include a super efficient building envelope using insulated concrete forms (ICFs); a unique mechanical system which recycles all condensate for water conservation, native landscaping and low flow fixtures; recycled and local materials; low VOC emitting materials and the purchase of green power for 70% of the building’s needs. As a result of the team’s focus on energy efficiency, the Overbrook School will realize a 43% operational savings in energy costs over a similar conventionally constructed building.
This project is LEED-NC Platinum Certified.
