The Morris Arboretum Horticlture Center

W.S. Cumby, Inc. completed construction of Phase I of the Morris Arboretum’s new Horticulture Complex. This project serves as the University of Pennsylvania’s first newly-constructed Green building project and has a goal of being awarded a LEED-NC Platinum Certification.

The new facility includes an 8,100 SF, one-story office building for staff, 7,600 SF of space for three vehicle storage buildings and a 2,850 SF high bay storage building.

Sustainable design and construction elements include:

• Use of dark sky compliant site lighting
• Rainwater collection for irrigation and flushing toilets
• On-site constructed wetland for the treatment of wastewater
• Two vegetative roofs
• SIPS panels for the roof of the office building
• Ground-source heat pump (geothermal HVAC)
• Use of displacement heating and cooling
• Photovoltaic panels will provide on-site renewable energy
• Solar water heating
• Purchasing 100% green power
• Use of natural day light via skylights and roof monitors
• Photocell sensors will automatically dim artificial lighting
